LGBTQ+ Resource List
LGBTQ+ make up around 40% of youth homelessness in the United States. Climate change will continue to displace more people as natural disasters increase, and LGBTQ+ will be at greater risk than the general population. On top of the risk of homelessness, gender-based violence increases after climate-related disasters as people take their feelings out on vulnerable and minority peoples and communities.
LGBTQ+ people, along with BIPOC and poor people, are subject to a disproportionate amount of indoor and outdoor pollution. This results from discriminatory housing policies and higher poverty rates. As a result, LGBTQ+ people suffer higher rates of chronic diseases associated with environmental exposure. They are also more likely to be denied disaster relief after extreme weather events.
Despite their increased risks from climate change, they are often left out of activist and decision-making spaces, along with other minority populations. Despite these challenges, they continue to do activism and have succeeded in forming their own activist spaces.
