Why we need to focus on the Ecological Crisis
We need to transition away from oil, coal, and natural gas to renewable energy and restore and protect ecosystems.
Fresh Water Shortage
Fresh water we rely on for drinking, agriculture, and industry is being put at risk because of overuse and climate change
How climate breakdown is affecting Americans
Half of Americans believe they are immune from climate and ecological breakdown
Deforestation and loss of Rainforests
Humans are destroying rainforests, one of Earth’s major carbon sinks and home to many species of plants and animals
Wet-bulb temperatures
Some areas hitting wet-bulb temperatures and becoming increasingly uninhabitable
Earth’s Tipping Points
Earth is on the brink of reaching irreversible tipping points that will spiral heating out of human control and into what scientists call an “uninhabitable hothouse Earth”
Ai climate research
Ai research shows that we will lock in 1.5 degrees of heating by 2033 and could hit 2 degrees of heating as soon as 2050.
Crop Failures and Famine
Extreme heat, floods, and droughts from global heating are already causing crop failures and famine
Oceans at risk from global warming
Scientists report that “ocean heat bomb has ignited.” Global warming is heating oceans, killing marine life, and may cause oceans to tip from carbon sinks into carbon emitters if urgent action isn’t taken to stop and reverse heating.
The rise of Pandemics, Superbugs, and Insect-borne disease
Habitat destruction and climate change pushes animals into human spaces, increasing the odds of zoonotic diseases
Aerosols and Global Heating
As we start to phase out fossil fuels, the cooling effect from aerosols will disappear within a year, while heat trapping gases will linger in the atmosphere for hundreds of years
Climate Injustice: the Global South
The climate crisis hurts the people and countries that did the least to cause it
Climate Change and human rights
How the climate and ecological emergencies are creating a human rights crisis
Fossil Fuels, air pollution & environmental racism
Air pollution from the burning of fossil fuels leads to health issues and premature deaths, with communities of color being used as sacrifice zones
Fossil fuels and chemicals harm our health
The climate and ecological emergency are putting human health and safety at risk
Climate Breakdown puts women in danger
Climate and ecological breakdown threatens the health and safety of women, increasing rates of violence and sexual abuse
Why we Act: February 2022 IPCC Report
Coverage of the Feb 2022 IPCC report from the UN.
“Our current future trajectory is a long drawn out tragedy. We have the privilege right now to know about it, we have the capacity to act on it, and history has shown us that anybody can be part of movements for change. We have the luxury of a rich history, which can teach us about them for inspiration.”
“So we have a responsibility, but there is a mass movement here which can help to make change happen. We believe collectively in the power of good people and you can still join us because there is still time.” This talk is from the Extinction Rebellion Open Call on March 15th. Explained: February 2022 IPCC Report
Coverage of the Feb 2022 IPCC report from the UN.
The IPCC reports are written in really difficult, technical language that makes them almost impossible to understand. We filmed this discussion about the most recent report, with the help of Dr Charlie Gardner from XR Scientists, to draw out the meaning behind the technical language and explain what’s really going on.
